Singapore

Singapore sits off the southernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia about 137 kilometers north of the equator. The Republic is made up of the island of Singapore, which is 42 kilometers long and 23 kilometers wide, together with about 60 smaller islands.

With an approximate population of approximately 4.6 million, it is made up of four major ethnic races - Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. The official language is English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil.

In 1965 Singapore became an independent and sovereign republic and a member of the United Nations.

Singapore is now a major international financial and trade centre and competes with Hong Kong as the world's biggest container port. Singapore has a reputation for being a carefully administered jurisdiction.
